Russia Group

The Russia Group of the National Defence University’s Department of Warfare started its activities in 2017.

The task of the Russia Group is to conduct research on the fundamentals of Russia’s security, military policy and art of war, provide teaching related to the research, and participate in societal discussion in the media and seminars. Central research topics include Russian strategy, military policy, armed forces, art of war and military thinking.

Through the joint professorship of the University of Helsinki and the National Defence University, this multidisciplinary group promotes research in Finland on Russian foreign and security policy and pursues cooperation with many national and international actors.  The group includes researchers, doctoral students, research assistants and university interns.

The Russia Group organizes a Russia Seminar every year bringing together top international researchers and experts in the field.

The Russia Group is led by Lieutenant Colonel Janne Pukkila.
