Flexible Study Right (JOO-studies)

The National Defence University (NDU) is a signatory of the national Flexible Study Right agreement that provides university students the opportunity to include studies from other Finnish universities in their degree.

The study right can be applied to students who have signed up as attending students in their home university. Based on the agreement the accepted studies can be either individual modules or minor subjects in a degree.

The right to study courses in another Finnish university will be awarded for a fixed-period. The study right begins when the target university has awarded the study right for studies supported by the home university. The study right is valid for a maximum of two (2) academic years.

JOO-studies

A Flexible Study Right student can study courses on all degree levels in the NDU. The NDU Departments offering JOO-studies are: Department of Warfare, Department of Leadership and Military Pedagogy and the Department of Military Technology.

JOO-studies by Department:

  • Department of Leadership and Military Pedagogy
  • Department of Warfare: Military History
  • Department of Warfare: Strategy

Detailed descriptions on the course content is available in the degree's Study Guide. Please note that all of the courses in the study guide are not open to JOO-students.

Applying

The National Defence University has fixed application periods for all Departments' JOO-studies. Deadline for applications for courses in the upcoming autumn or the entire academic year is 30 April (courses between August and December). The deadline for courses in the next spring is 31 October (courses between January and July). If the deadline date of the application falls on a weekend, the application period will end on the next working day.

Applications for JOO-studies should be submitted through the JOOPAS Electronic Application system. The system also includes instuctions for filing an application. Remember to file the application with your home university early, leaving enough time for processing it, because applications received after the deadline will not be processed.
