National Defence University Participates in Combined Joint Staff Exercise 19 (CJSE 19) 1−11 April 2019.

Combined Joint Staff Exercise 19 is a multinational staff exercise organised by the Swedish Armed Forces together with the Swedish Defence University (SEDU). The exercise scenario is a UN Mandated (chapter VII) crisis management operation, with the UN, NATO and different international organisations as actors in the exercise.

The exercise objective is to train the participants in the planning and execution of a UN-mandated NATO-led crisis management operation, according to the principles of the so-called comprehensive approach. For the individual participant (learner) the objective of the exercise is to provide them with the readiness to function in a multinational staff of a crisis management operation.

The exercise takes place in three locations in Sweden. Staff officers and civilians from a total of seven countries will be participating in the exercise. The exercise will have a total strength of 900.

The National Defence University's contingent in the exercise consists of the General Staff Officer Course, the Senior Staff Officer Course and NDU staff members. Personnel from elsewhere in the Finnish Defence Forces are also participating in CJSE. The total strength of the Finnish contingent is approximately 250 persons. The senior national representative of the Finnish contingent is the rector of the National Defence University, Major General Jari Kallio. The main organiser and the Head of Delegation for Finland is Commander Jyrki Ahonen from the NDU's Department of Leadership and Military Pedagogy.
