ISMS 2020 CONFERENCE ONLINE PHASE BEGINS – OVER 60 STUDIES FROM NEARLY 20 COUNTRIES

The annual International Society of Military Sciences (ISMS) Conference is organised as a virtual event for the first time this autumn. The first phase of the virtual conference, organised by the National Defence University, started on Tuesday 13 October and ends today. In this so-called offline phase, the participants have been able to familiarise themselves with the research papers presented in the conference and to comment them online under the guidance of the chairs of the working groups.

Tomorrow Tuesday 27 October, starts the second, so-called online phase of the course. It will be done in real-time online. The online phase follows the structure of a traditional academic conference. The ten parallel working groups of the conference present over 60 studies. Overall, the conference has over 130 participants from nearly 20 countries.
Rector of the National Defence University, Major General Jari Kallio and Research Director Hannu Kari will present their opening remarks at 13.00. The first keynote speaker is the Development Manager of Universities Finland UNIFI, Dr Eeva Nyrövaara.  

The second keynote speaker is DSocSci, Major General (ret) Pertti Salminen. His keynote address will begin 28 October 2020 at 20.30. After his keynote address the chair of ISMS will be transferred to Canada (Royal Military College of Canada).

ISMS 2020 CONFERENCE TAKING PLACE – OVER 60 STUDIES TO BE PRESENTED

This autumn, the annual International Society of Military Sciences Conference is organised as a virtual event for the first time.  This virtual conference arranged by the National Defence University started on Tuesday 13 October.  

In the first phase of the conference scheduled until 26 October, participants are invited to familiarise themselves at their own pace with research papers accepted to the presented at the conference and to comment on them via the online platform as instructed by the working group chairmen. 

The second phase of the conference will be organised 27-29 October. Following the structure of traditional academic conferences, it will include plenary presentation sessions, and working group sessions in real time. 

Over 60 studies were accepted to be presented at the conference, divided between ten working groups according to themes.  More than 120 participants have registered. In addition to researchers from Finland, the Nordic and Baltic countries, researchers i.a. from Germany, Poland, Austria, Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Canada and the United States attend the conference.
